How ironic is it that the farmers who grow enough agricultural produce to feed the entire country are themselves often malnourished or undernourished! The growing dependence on cash crops means that we have forgotten our tradition of “परस बाग” or backyard garden. It was meant to grow vegetables and fruits that give wholesome nutritious food for the family.
Sevavardhini is working to revive this tradition by helping farmers
revive this habit. We are inspired by “seed mother” (बीज
माता )
Padmashri
– Smt Rahibai Popere.
As a part of this initiative, we would
be procuring seeds for 10 different plants and distributing these kits to
farmers. They would also get training about how to grow these plants in their
own backyard and use the harvest to provide wholesome food variety for their
near and dear ones. This has already been tried out by us in the Jalgaon region
and it works. For instance, just one healthy creeper of pumpkin can provide
enough pumpkin for a family for a year.
Farmers who will be selected to receive
this kit will be encouraged to also harvest seeds and share them in the
neighborhood to further expand this initiative.
One such kit costs Rs. 250 only. At
present, we have already identified 1000 farmers from all over the state to
receive the kits.

At present, it may seem like we are nearing the end of the pandemic, and that all these woes will be behind us. But the long-term effects of COVID-19 can still be widely felt.
Your generous contributions to this
noble cause will be highly appreciated.
